Our Christmas Activities for this year includes Christmas Pom Poms, Christmas Tree making, and Snow Globes. We split the activities into two days, overall we had 6 children attend. By far their favourite was Snow globes.
The Pom Poms were fun, with the children making Santa's, Snowmen and Reindeer. Our Trees were cut out of card and cut so they could stand, then were decorated in glitter, paper, string, sequins, crepe paper and coloured in with textas and pencils. Lastly, the children created Angels, Santa's and Christmas Trees for their snow globes. The Children Always have fun at our Christmas activities this year was no exception, lots of laughter and fun. We had 3 adults during the day making their Christmas cards for the year. We had some very creative designs. I am sure the recipients of these cards are going to be impressed.
Then after school, we had 4 kids come in to make cards or their parents and siblings. They had a wonderful time and I am sure their parents are going to enjoy the cards that were made! What a success this day turned out to be.
We had 19 stall holders ranging from cleaning products, to card making, to home decor. We estimate that we had about 60 - 70 people through the doors. The feedback from all stall holders was very positive, and the community members all agreed it was great, some even wanting one every weekend. Thank you to all who made the effort to come out and support us and other local businesses. Our stall holders would like to thank the community for their support. With out them, they would be able to do what they love! The Bencubbin Community Resource Centre would like to thank all stall holders for coming and supporting our event. We would also like to thank The community for supporting the stall holders for supporting our event. On Wednesday evening we had invited the community to come to our showing of Cover to Cover featuring Fiona Palmer.
Fiona spoke about the difficulties of living in a small rural town, which is relevant to our community members. She also spoke about her current book, The Saddler Boys, her previous book and her next up coming book. Fiona also spoke about her role in the RRR Network. It was great to see some of our local ladies attend this event. They enjoyed the show and it started good conversations about rural life. Upon receiving our Seniors Week Grant, we planned an afternoon and evening out to recognise all that our seniors do in our community.
We took our seniors to Nungarin for lunch at The Woolshed Hotel, and then a look through the Nungarin Mueseam. After about 2 hours we then headed onto Merredin for afternoon tea. We enjoyed scones and jam. Then it was time to head to the Cummins Theatre for dinner and to watch the Beggers present Sing! The show was captivating and they sung songs from various artists Our seniors really enjoyed the event, it was great for them to be recognised in our community, Keens Bros Truck Driving School recently offered Training and assessments for HR and MC Truck Licences. This was a huge success for the Bencubbin Community with 8 people gaining an HR licence, 12 gaining an MC truck Licence. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the local farmer for allowing us the use to their trucks. Thank You Being in a small rural community a truck licence is almost essential. Every few years there is a new generation coming up that require a licence and those who need to upgrade. We were lucky to have so many participants. With the help of advertising going into surrounding towns, we were able to boost the numbers.
The children has so much fun designing and playing with clay. We had many creative designs, such as cups, flower pots, boxes, animals and more. The children were able to paint the clay if they desired.
It was great to see so many men and women at our Men's Health Event. Community Involvement is what a town needs to survive and we are fortunate that we have people who enjoy coming to our events.
We held this event in partnership with “The Cancer Council” and “Regional Men's Health”. Regional Mens Health provided a ‘Pitstop’ to start off the evening where the men had their oil pressure, shockies and chassis checked. Everyone then sat down to a delicious dinner. The salads were catered for by KCs Café and the meat was from Koorda Meat Supplies. After dinner Karen Hansen, from the “Cancer Council” talked about various cancers that relate to men some signs and symptoms to watch for. There was a short break and then Terry Melrose, from Regional Men's Health talked on Men's sexual wellbeing and health. We have had very positive feedback from those who have attended. Local author and publisher, Linda Moore, who writes under her maiden name of Linda Bettenay, was a star performer this week as she entertained a group of Bencubbin locals with a passionate talk about her new book 'Wishes for Starlight'. Bettenay's topic found great resonance with this group of enthusiastic locals. Those who attended were treated to an entertaining talk. The group included a smattering of folk who had read Linda's first book enjoyed it and were enthusiastic to read her second. There were even a few long lost relative in the audience - Linda is related to the Walker family. Linda, who with husband Mike, owns and publishes the Roleystone Courier every month, says she blames her mum for her passionate interest in local historical characters and events. Wishes for Starlight is her second novel based on real characters, with names being changed to protect the not-so-innocent. It’s the story of a young deaf-mute Aboriginal boy who grew up in a time when our indigenous fellow-Australians were treated as though they were second-class citizens. Starlight’s story is full of intrigue, injustice, unlikely friendships and a degree of hope. The audience was also entranced by the unbelievable true story behind Linda's first book 'Secrets Mothers Keep' which occurred in Wubin and Dalwallinu. Linda revealed how her husband Mike only recently discovered that his grandfather had been murdered and grandmother, mother and two aunts had been savagely assaulted and so unearthed a carefully kept secret that had existed in the family for over 80 years. She also explained how she had researched the story, discovering strange links across the globe which assisted her to develop a complex set of extraordinary characters and bring this pioneering yarn to life. Both books contain a lot more fact than fiction, which certainly give them an edge on mere fictional characters and events. They are an eye-opening look into some dubious practices in WA history. Linda was accompanied by her husband, Mike, who is probably her greatest fan. Attendees eagerly purchased copies of both books, which were happily signed by the author. 'I was impressed with the delightful welcome. Special thanks to Sharon and Jess from the Bencubbin CRC for their organisation. Sharing the joy behind my books is a fulfilling experience,’ Bettenay said. Linda will definitely be back to Bencubbin! If you would like to know more about Linda's Books or for details on events or purchasing the book you can get a copy at the Resource Centre or go to www.lindasbooks.com.au or for details on the author tours visit her facebook page www.facebook.com/lindasbookswa On the 25th of August Brad Cusworth from “True Blue Business Support” came to Bencubbin to hold a Microsoft Excel course. The course started out touching on the basics of Microsoft Excel, then moving on to the more intermediate course. We had 5 participants of various skill levels for the course and they all said they learnt different things, and took away information that will help them in their jobs and even in their day to lives. Brad touched on things such as copying and pasting into another worksheet, pasting formulas, conditional formatting, how to filter your lists, charts. We were one of Brads first groups to receive this presentations. He was an excellent presenter, and well recommended for anyone. Once again we would like to thank all those who came and supported us here at the Resource Centre and our events we hold. If I thought the children were excited last week, boy was I in for a surprise. Times the noise level by 7 and add a few more children and the echo's of the Rec Ground kitchen that equals Thursday the 16 of July 2015. However loud the children were, it was all worth it to see the amazing creativity and thought that the children put into the ingredients they put on their pizzas. Bencubbin really does have some amazingly creative children. We started off with the very messy task of making our own pizza dough. Very Messy, but the children really enjoyed it, kneading the dough and rolling it out onto the table and kneading it a bit more. Then we had to set the dough aside to let it rise. The children then were allowed to choose what ingredients they wanted on their pizza. They had a choice of chicken, pineapple, onion, cheese, salami, mushrooms, ham, bacon, tomatoes, feta cheese, red or green capsicum, spinach and of course tomato or bbq pizza sauce.
While waiting for the dough to rise they chopped and prepared the ingredients that they wanted on their pizza, by the time we had finished all the prep work, the dough was ready and we could start to roll out our base into some quite interesting shapes. Then we put on the toppings and set them into the oven until they were ready. While waiting the children were let lose to run around the oval and let out some energy. When the pizzas were ready, we cut them into slices and sat down to enjoy the incredible flavours created by our Bencubbin children. On the table there was glitter, paint, streamers, glue, paper, shiny sequins, pop sticks, pencils, rocks, little colourful stones and much MUCH more. Slowly but surely the children started walking through the door and the noise level of Resource Centre quickly rose. Not to worry though, we had our trusty helper Nina Grylls here to help me out with the 10 very excited children. As the children walked through our doors and into the conference room they were handed a canvas and told to go for there lives. They were allowed to use anything on the table and my oh my did their imaginations run wild. We had beaches, rainbows, houses, farms, under the seas, and more. There was glitter, sequins, paint and glue everywhere (except in the parents home). You’re welcome parents. :) |
